The doctoral program at Florida State is designed to prepare individuals for employment in colleges as teachers and researchers; and for administrative leadership positions in a variety of settings, including private businesses, professional and college athletics, and administration in higher education. Research is a major endeavor and concentrates on the understanding and interpretation of research literature as well as the ability to conduct both theoretical and applied studies. This program is designed for individuals who wish to pursue careers in higher education as a researcher and a graduate faculty member. The program of study will have a strong emphasis in the theoretical knowledge base and research paradigms needed to conduct theoretical research, as well as the knowledge base required to supervise graduate student research. The research emphasis of students will normally be directed toward the testing of theoretical administrative questions and models applied to sport., The masters degree provides students with an advanced understanding of sport management and the various components that comprise this area of study. Although course content will focus on the applied aspects of sport management, students will be required to become knowledgeable of the current literature, both applied and research based. To enhance the student's practical experiences, internships are a required element of the program of study. This specialization prepares individuals for employment at the entry or mid-level position. The core courses cover a range of NASSM/NASPE approved content areas and focus on combining theoretical understanding with practical applications for those wishing to work in the sport industry. Electives give students the opportunity to focus on a particular area of the sport industry that interests them. There are courses specific to collegiate athletics, the broader industry, and socio-cultural courses dealing with current issues in the sport industry.
