Delaware State houses one of the region’s premier research facilities in applied optics — the Optical Science Center for Applied Research (OSCAR) houses the Center for Research and Education in Optical Sciences and Applications (CREOSA) funded by NSF and the Center for Applied Optics for Space Sciences. In this unusually robust research environment, Master’s candidates work with faculty on team-based projects, while designing and executing independent, self-directed research. The program culminates in an original research thesis and oral defense.
After earning their Master’s degree, students can transition directly into Delaware State’s Ph.D. program --- one of only about a dozen Optics doctoral programs nationwide.
Master’s degree candidates at Delaware State engage in a full range of activities to prepare them for careers in academia, industry, and/or the nonprofit sector. These include
* conducting independent research
* working with state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation
* developing professional networks with other academic researchers
* establishing contacts with potential employers in industry
* interning at NASA facilities
Delaware State University is accrediated, Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). There currently isn't accreditation of Optical Science programs.
International Student Requirements:
Applicants must show evidence that they have earned the baccalaureate degree at an accredited college or university and possess the ability to carry out graduate work of high quality. Applicants for degree status should have a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.50 (on a 4-point scale) and a scholastic average of 3.00 in their undergraduate major. They should have successfully completed specific courses at the undergraduate level in physics or engineering and have taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Foreign applicants must also take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applicants should attain a score of at least 550 on the TOEFL. An official transcript of all previous undergraduate and graduate work must be submitted through the World Education Services-International Credential Evaluation
