Both the M.A. and Ph.D. programs in Spanish allow students to emphasize Hispanic literature or Hispanic linguistics. The Ph.D. program requires coursework in the history of the Spanish language, and in literary or linguistic scholarship, and competence in two foreign languages other than Spanish, one of which must be French or German. Students wishing to pursue the Ph.D. are not required to have first completed the master's degree.
