Mobile robots provide excellent examples of mechatronic systems. In order to provide mobility, sensor systems are required to provide the information necessary for guidance and navigation. Our particular interests are in the use of mobile robots on construction sites and in the enhancement of mobility for the disabled. Pioneering work with support from JCB has demonstrated intelligent, rule-based, control for excavating machinery which is an international "first" and has generated considerable interest in Europe and the Far East (specifically from companies in Japan and Korea). Another project, funded by the EPSRC (Innovative anufacturing Initiative) in collaboration with Stent Foundations, is focused on the influence of IT on piling operations.
