The Engineering Design Centre (EDC) is the national centre for research in the conceptual stage of engineering design. It was founded in 1990 in recognition of the international reputation of the Engineering Department at Lancaster University for pioneering research in the engineering design process. The primary focus of its research is the development of computer support for the conceptual stage of the engineering design process and its research is embodied in a software product called Schemebuilder. Schemebuilder is essentially a knowledge management system which uses techniques from artificial intelligence and information technology significantly to multiply the expertise of the designer. The EDC has regular contacts with institutions in Europe and in North America and organises an Annual International Workshop on Computer Aided Conceptual Design.
