This programme prepares graduates to teach across the secondary (11-18) age range in the following subjects: English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, Sciences (Biology, Physics and Chemistry), and Religious Education. The Secondary PGCE programme has been awarded outstanding grades by OFSTED in recent inspections. Our teacher training courses run in close partnership with schools in the region. They are based on the conviction that learning to teach depends on having ample opportunities to observe in classrooms, to teach and to discuss teaching with experienced professionals in schools, supported by rigorously-structured and relevant programmes of University seminars and workshops. Students are on school placement for two- thirds of the course and are normally placed in pairs, giving opportunities for team teaching, peer observation and support. The school-based elements are fully integrated with the programmes in the University. School mentors and University tutors share a consistent aspiration to support professional learning and achieve high-quality practice with their students. Our courses have a clear structure designed to develop students as flexible and competent teachers. We are concerned to ensure that students develop not only the skills and understanding needed for effective subject teaching, but also the capability to work as a member of a professional staff team in a school.
