The School of Engineering, Design and Technology’s new MSc in Manufacturing Management addresses the technological drive of this century and is designed to produce students who can meet the huge demand for well-qualified manufacturing engineers.
Intelligent machines, robots, advanced machines control systems, and automated guided vehicles, to name but a few, are examples of manufacturing engineering which have had a major impact on society. Research, development and training in this area feature strongly on a global scale. The UK alone invests millions of pounds a year in world-class research that forms the basis for future economic development. The manufacturing industry contributes around £162 billion to the UK’s exports. Further statistics show that the manufacturing sector employs over 1.5 million people in the UK and represents 7% of the total UK GDP. This is also reflected in professional institutions, as seen in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), whose largest section is the Manufacturing Division, with over 12,500 members.
To remain competitive in the world marketplace, there is a constant demand for well-qualified graduate manufacturing engineers, who are versatile, adaptable, computer literate, and possess technical knowledge, analytical capability and practical skills coupled with business and commercial awareness in the design and implementation of manufacturing technologies and systems.
This new MSc study programme is designed to meet these needs, providing skills in computer-aided design and manufacturing, manufacturing technologies and processes, quality control systems, supply chain management, computer-integrated manufacturing, materials selection, and the latest techniques such as lean manufacturing systems to support this ever-expanding industry.
