MSc/Dip/Cert/CPD in Drug Discovery (Online Distance Learning), MSc/Dip/Cert/CPD in Drug Discovery (Online Distance Learning)
Online postgraduate opportunities in drug discovery
Two part time distance learning programmes in drug discovery are available at the University of Edinburgh. The School of Biological Sciences offers a research rich environment in which to develop as a scientist and entrepreneur.
MSc in Next Generation Drug Discovery
The MSc in Next Generation Drug Discovery will provide you with the knowledge to develop a career around new approaches to drug discovery. You will be introduced to the most up to date methods for identifying the most suitable molecular targets against which to develop effective medicines and will study the challenges in developing novel drugs.
MSc in Drug Discovery and Protein Biotechnology
The MSc in Drug Discovery and Protein Biotechnology will introduce you to the design and improvement of different families of proteins. The modern pharmaceutical industry encompasses the development of 'biologics', for example antibodies and protein hormones, as much as it does traditional small-molecule drug discovery.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
A CPD option is available on eight of the courses we offer on the full degree programmes. You can try out one or more of our courses as an independent CPD option before committing to a full programme.
Our CPD courses are designed to suit the needs of students who prefer to study in their own time, at their own pace and in their own environment.
Read more about CPD options on our website.
Our distance learning programmes will enhance your career prospects broadening your current, marketable knowledge and developing advanced analytical and presentational skills, within the social and intellectual sphere of a leading international university.
Graduates from our programme have:
* A strong background in the science underlying emerging fields of drug discovery.
* An understanding of how next generational drug discovery can be applied to real-world problems and create new growth industries.
* Relevant skills and approaches in biological research, achieved through a combination of solving realistic problems, research projects and group work.
* An understanding of scientific method and the ability to think critically and construct alternative arguments and hypotheses.
* A range of transferable skills and graduate attributes in addition to specialised knowledge.
Studying online means you can gain a qualification while still meeting your professional and personal commitments and our programmes offer maximum flexibility.
You can opt for a fast-track option to complete the MSc in two years, or you can spread your degree programme over a maximum of six years.
The first year of both programmes is the same, providing a strong foundational knowledge from which you can then specialise in the diploma year and during your research project. Should your interests change, after the first year you can transfer from the MSc in Next Generation Drug Discovery to the MSc in Drug Discovery and Protein Biotechnology, and vice-versa.
Both programmes follow the same basic structure, with different optional courses depending on your programme of choice. You will take six taught courses in each of the first two years - a mixture of compulsory and optional courses.
In your final year you will pursue a research project leading to a dissertation. This exciting opportunity is a vital part of your degree, allowing you to delve deeper into research in this field.
The programme will be delivered via virtual learning classrooms, peer-to-peer discussion and interactive exercises.
