This programme (previously the MRes Applied Linguistics) provides research training and interdisciplinary insights into the study of applied linguistics, according to the Economic and Social Research CouncilÆs (ESRC) postgraduate training guidelines. It prepares candidates for further research leading to doctoral degrees. It is approved by the ESRC for the award of studentships to Home and EU candidates.You take modules to a total value of 180 credits. These include: 60 credits of generic social science research training; 60 credits of discipline-specific training (including bilingualism and bilingual education, language and cross-cultural communication, interaction in social and professional context, discourse analysis, TESOL, language acquisition and disorder); and a 60-credit research project.Assessment is by course work associated with each of the taught modular courses, including short class tests and submitted work. The research project comprises a portfolio of critical reviews of literature, case reports, pilot experiments or draft conference/journal articles or a dissertation.
