A Cultural Studies PhD Program takes an interdisciplinary approach that may incorporate subjects such as film, gender studies, politics, sexuality and other areas. While the field of cultural studies different areas, students are encouraged to approach their area of interest critically. Some programs may allow students to focus on two areas of study rather than one.
The preferable prerequisite for admission to a PhD program in Cultural Studies is a Master’s degree. Students may come to the doctoral program with degrees in anthropology, English, history, sociology, and other traditional disciplines, as well as in interdisciplinary programs such as Media Studies, Women and Gender Studies, and African-American Studies.
Students working towards a PhD in Cultural Studies must first complete core courses in cultural studies theory, methods and topics. These core courses initiate students in the field and establish certain critical and theoretical approaches. After this, students can begin research on their concentration area for the dissertation that is required to complete the degree.
