A primary goal of the program is to help future counselors learn to work and communicate with America’s many diverse groups and individuals with respect for their abilities, race, sex, age, region and cultural heritage. The counseling process aids youth in discovering, appreciating and actualizing their unique selves in their relationship with others. School counselors assist students in that process through individual counseling and educational planning sessions, small group activities and classroom guidance. School counselors also work with families, teachers, administrators and community members in consultative and collaborative relationships. They serve as advocates for individual students and work to promote positive learning environments for all. School counselors need strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. A master’s degree is required to become a school counselor.     Accreditation Information: The Graduate School at UW-Stout is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges & Secondary Schools (NCA) to offer programs at the master's and education specialist levels.  # Of Credits Required: 50  Time To Degree: 2+ years    Previous Degrees BS/BA degree from an accredited institution, and an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75. Applicants may be admitted on probationary status if their overall GPA is at least 2.50, but less than 2.75. These exceptions are subject to a strict limit of 10% of the students in the program and must be individually negotiated with the recommendation of the program director and the approval of the Graduate School.  Pre-Requisite Courses International Student Requirements Admission requirements include: (1) Admission to a graduate degree program and the Graduate School; (2) English proficiency TOEFL score of at least 173 computer-based and 500 paper-based or 213 computer-based, 550 paper-based depending on which program is chosen, and 61 Internet-based. Test scores should be sent directly to UW-Stout (school code #1740); (3) Official copies of all post-secondary transcripts (translated into English), including proof of baccalaureate and/or highest earned degree; (4) Undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale; (5) specific program requirements.
