The Department of Botany offers graduate studies leading to the Ph.D. and M.S. degrees, with emphasis in the areas of plant molecular biology, plant physiology, population biology, ecology, paleobotany, and systematics. The range of the faculty interests include protista, algae and fungi as well as nonvascular and vascular plants. Students may also take advantage of close ties to other departments at the University, such as Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Zoology, as well as the Friday Harbor Marine Laboratories on San Juan Island, the College of Forest Resources, the Center for Quantitative Sciences, the College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences, the Center for Quaternary Research, and the Center for Urban Horticulture.
