The Departments of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics in the School of Pharmacy offer programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences. These programs provide the preparation and research experience for academic, governmental and industrial careers. Graduate degrees in pharmaceutical sciences do not provide eligibility for licensure as a pharmacist. Persons interested in programs leading to licensure as a pharmacist or in advanced professionals programs in pharmacy are referred to the School of Pharmacy section of the Undergraduate and Professional Programs Bulletin. Students may elect to pursue a joint Pharm.D./Ph.D. program.
Current research interests of the department include: bioavailability studies; macromolecule drug delivery; cell transport mechanisms; clinical pharmacokinetics, including computer modeling of pharmacokinetics in man and use of individual pharmacokinetic parameters in optimizing dosage regimens; in-vitro and in-vivo drug metabolism and transport studies; drug delivery; targeting and transport of macromolecules; chromatographic, electrophoretic and spectroscopic approaches for analysis of drugs; pharmacodynamics; biotechnology; dosage form design; aerosol and inhalation technology; pharmaceutical marketing; pharmaceutical outcomes; pharmaco-economics; geriatric pharmacokinetics; design and management of pharmacy-related health services systems; drug prescribing; health ethics and utilization studies.
