Doctoral
Ph.D.- Clinical, Counseling or General/Experimental Psychology
On Campus

The Department of Psychology in the College of Humanities and Sciences offers education in Clinical, Counseling and General/Experimental Psychology leading to the doctorate of philosophy degree. Students earn a master's degree "along the way," but the department does not admit students who wish to earn only a terminal master's. The doctoral training takes a minimum of 4 years for Experimental and 5 years for Clinical and Counseling students. The American Psychological Association accredits the doctoral programs in Clinical and Counseling psychology. The programs emphasize the scientist-practitioner model and prepare students for research and service in professional psychology, including positions in university academic departments, medical school departments, and counseling centers, mental health agencies and hospitals, physical health facilities and other organizational settings, or private practice. Both Clinical and Counseling students complete a one-year internship as part of their applied training.
