Graduates gain an understanding of the fundamental properties of optoelectronic materials and experience of the technology and operation of a wide range of laser and semiconductor devices. The joint involvement of the Departments of Physics at both Heriot-Watt and St Andrews Universities makes available to students the combined expertise and diversity of research equipment in the two universities. In addition students gain experience of industrial research environments during their three month research project at companies throughout the UK. Formal lectures and laboratory experiments are provided at both universities and a project is normally undertaken in conjunction with an industrial company over a period of 12 weeks. Companies participating in the course include British Telecom, British Aerospace, DRA, Edinburgh Sensors, GEC Marconi, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel, Sharp, Shell Research and Thorn-EMI (CRL).
