The Systems stream is suitable for applicants with the mathematical background that comes with a physical science or engineering degree; the HCI and Business versions are for applicants who have studied probability and statistics in,for example, a business studies or social science degree. There are many IT conversion courses on offer which concentrate on computing and the business applications of IT, but this one has a unique emphasis. Its aim is to provide a broad-based introduction to Information Technology, with options in Business, Systems or HCI. It has been taken successfully by students from a wide range of disciplines but it is not suitable for graduates in the Arts. No previous computing experience is required, but it is expected that applicants will have at least the minimum mathematical background mentioned above in the entrance requirements. Graduates of the course have generally been successful in gaining employment in business and industry. The course covers the elements of Information and Communication Theory, Programming, Data Communications, Computer Structures and the principles of Engineering Software in a series of core modules, and offers a range of advanced options from the modular masters program of the Department and from the School of Management. There are laboratory sessions, practical assignments andcomputing projects to illustrate and extend the lecture program.
