This programme focuses upon the relationship between society, culture, politics and ideology in England between c.1500 and c.1700. Topics include: changing notions of political obligation and consent; ideas about power, gender and social relations; the nature of government and authority; popular culture; witchcraft; the English Revolution; and the history of rebellions. Special attention is given to the regional history of East Anglia, due to the local presence of rich,under-exploited archival sources concerning most aspects of early modern English history. Students will receive optional training in palaeography, and will alsoattend sessions on historiography and historical theory. Assessment is partially based upon the submission of a 20,000 word research-based dissertation, carried out under the supervision of a member of faculty.
