This programme, led by Professor Andrew Motion, is for students who are seriously committed to writing and are practising or prospective authors. It does not claim to teach students to be professional writers, although excellent contacts are maintained with agents, publishers and the professional theatre; it is essentially for those who are already writing seriously and wish to extend the range of their work. There are three parallel entry points: one in prose fiction, one in poetry, and one in scriptwriting. The programme involves the intensive examination of students' own work, and also draws on aspects of teaching in nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature, literary theory, and film and cultural studies. Emphasis is placed on both the theoretical and practical aspects of writing, including the possibilities of publication and performance. Theselection of candidates is based on submission of a portfolio of recent work and on interview. There are two core units in Prose Fiction, two in Poetry, and two in Scriptwriting, all taught in workshops.
