Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies
On Campus

The MA in Applied Theology curriculum is designed to help students develop individual potential by integrating the study of theology with professional application. Coursework addresses issues of pastoral counseling, liturgy, symbol, scriptural resources, prayer and meditation, set against a backdrop of cultures and religious traditions, life philosophies, social structures and historical patterns. Courses are offered primarily on weekends: Friday evenings, Saturdays during daylight hours and Sunday afternoons, to accommodate work, spiritual practice and worship schedules. Master of Divinity Equivalent Applied Theology students whose goals include chaplain certification, ordination and/or progressing to the Doctor of Ministry program may choose to enroll in the 48-credit Graduate Theological Studies Certificate program. This certificate, coupled with the MAAT program, is recognized as a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) equivalent. Career Paths Careers paths for MA in Applied Theology (MAAT) graduates include spiritual director, retreat director, spiritual counselor, workshop coordinator, pastor and educator. Graduates are successful as ethicists in ethics centers; ministers or religious educators in churches, synagogues and other places of worship; teachers in elementary schools, high schools, colleges and seminaries; and chaplains in hospitals, hospice centers, corrections facilities, retirement centers, corporations, universities and military bases. Students may combine previous training and professional work experience with theology, pastoral care and spiritual direction. In this program of study, students connect fields such as medicine, science, theatre, music, art, law, business, social welfare and mental health.
