We invite you to take a look at our physics graduate program at Kent State. We have an excellent track record in guiding our PhD students to a timely completion of their degrees, and over the past two decades, our students have graduated several months sooner than national norms for the physics PhD, even though we are more flexible than many other schools in admitting students who need an extra semester to make-up for gaps in their undergraduate preparation. Our graduating students receive multiple and lucrative job offers in the academic, government, and industrial sectors. All students in our program receive an Assistantship and a full tuition scholarship. Grant-funded Research Assistant appointments cover 12 months, and starting Sept 2009, will pay $2000/month. Beginning graduate students receive a Teaching Assistantship which provides full support during the 9-month Academic Year, and provides at least half-time support during the 3 summer months. Students can obtain full-time support over the summer at the end of their first year by carrying out exploratory research under the direction of a faculty member who is seeking to recruit a new student. We also provide a flat allocation ($1010 currently) towards health insurance. We believe that our level of stipend and other support is very competitive in view of the relatively low cost of living in our local area; for example, the monthly rent for a university-owned two-bedroom furnished apartment is $690, and this includes heating, electricity, cable TV and high-speed internet. Local bus service is free for Kent students. US applicants are invited to visit us during the spring semester in order to see our campus and facilities, and experience the friendly and supportive environment of our department first-hand. We offer Travel Scholarships for this purpose.
