The programs are selective and relatively small, reflecting the department's long and continuing commitment to a historical orientation in literary study. The Master of Arts is open to students with a bachelor's degree in English or a related discipline. Students in the literature program may choose either a thesis or non-thesis plan. The doctoral program is open to students with the M.A. or the equivalent. Exceptional students are encouraged to apply for admission directly into the Ph.D. program from their bachelor's degree study.
