Ecosystem science is the study of biotic and abiotic components and their interaction within an ecosystem. It is firmly grounded in ecological theory, and theory is a significant component of our research efforts. This program has an applied focus that examines how ecosystem functions produce and maintain products and services of importance to human societies, e.g. water purification in wetlands. In this context, ecosystem science provides a powerful framework for identifying ecological mechanisms underling environmental problems such as: problems of land degradation, water pollution, and loss of species and habitat.
