The department was established in the 1960s, when the field of computing was young and such departments were a rare find. Regionally, computing was becoming a strong component of the economy and UD anticipated the increased demand for graduates trained in computer science. The graduate program in computer science offers a comprehensive approach to theory and application and exposes students to a variety of analytical methods.
