Master's
M.Sc. - Geology
On Campus

The Department of Earth and Environmental Science at Acadia University offers instruction and research training leading to the MSc degree in Geology. Courses and research supervision are offered in the general areas of igneous petrology, metamorphic petrology, regional tectonics, Appalachian geology, applied geochemistry, economic geology, sedimentology, carbonate petrology, Precambrian environmental evolution, Quaternary geology, and environmental earth science. Two options are available. The most common option normally require at least two full academic years (September to April) plus the intervening summer to complete the MSc requirements. The student is required to complete 5 3-hour courses at an advanced level and a thesis. A typical course involves formal instruction for three hours per week for one term (12 weeks) plus laboratory exercises. Some courses may be taught in tutorial sessions, or be seminar and/or research oriented. The second option is offered in conjunction with the Nova Scotia Community College – Centre of Geographic Sciences Campus (CoGS), Lawrencetown, NS, and involves successful completion of a Diploma in Remote Sensing or a Diploma in Geographic Information Systems from CoGS, followed by study at Acadia to complete three 3-hour courses and a thesis. Candidates in the MSc program in conjunction with CoGS will spend the first nine months at the Centre of Geographic Sciences and are likely to require a minimum of 15 months to complete the MSc requirements at Acadia. Both options require a thesis proposal, to be completed before the initiation of field work. Initial inquiries should be addressed to the Graduate Coordinator, Department of Earth and Environmental Science. Applications are reviewed upon receipt. Applicants to the MSc program in conjunction with CoGS must first apply to the diploma program at CoGS: application to Acadia will normally be done during the nine months of study at CoGS.
