M.S.-Library and Information Science

This 36-credit hour program educates students to become leaders in the evolution of the library and information profession in the 21st century. The MSLIS is offered in both online and on-campus formats. Most students complete the program in one to two years, depending on their course load. A maximum of seven years is permitted. The MSLIS degree provides a foundation in traditional librarianship as well as skill sets necessary for emerging leadership roles of librarians in information centers, the information industry, and other venues. The School of Information Studies faculty members are nationally known leaders in such fields as digital literacy, school media libraries, digital libraries, classification, reference services, and much more. The MSLIS degree at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University is accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) and ranked #3 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Professional librarians today are in high demand in libraries across the country as well as in information centers in organizations and the information industry. Opportunities are exceptionally good for graduates with prior training and experience in the sciences and health profession. Perhaps the fastest growing area of job growth in the profession, however, involves the application of technology to improve libraries and information centers. Three themes run throughout the courses in the MSLIS program: * Focus on users * Effective leadership and management of information and information organizations * Appropriate and effective use of information technologies The MSLIS program also offers a specialization in School Media, as well as a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Digital Libraries for those who want to work with organizing and managing collections of digital information, either within or outside of established libraries, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in School Media.
