The Jewish Thought Department offers a curriculum designed to provide students with knowledge of fundamental issues and trends in the history of Jewish philosophy as well as Jewish mysticism. Courses are offered in biblical, rabbinic, medieval, and modern Jewish thought, as well as in Jewish ethics, political thought, Kabbalah, and Hasidism. Course offerings are enriched by occasional special topics and by the contributions of visiting professors. The courses in the department lead to the MA, DHL, and PhD degrees. Applicants are recommended to have a general familiarity with the major expressions and history of Jewish philosophy, as well as previous course work in Western philosophy. Some background in Jewish studies is beneficial as well.
