The M.A. program in English Education leads to New York State certification for grades 7-12. Staffed by experts in language and literature who are all experienced secondary teachers and teacher educators, the program emphasizes transactions between content mastery and teaching methods in order to provoke critical thought and inquiry-based learning. Extensive school-based fieldwork is required prior to student teaching. This helps familiarize students with urban educational environments and enables them to develop classroom strategies that are innovative and appropriate for teaching today's students. The pivotal experience of the program consists of two semesters of student teaching, one at the middle and one at the high school level. Here M.A. students mentored by their cooperating teachers, NYU field supervisors, and methods teachers are given responsibility for teaching in the New York City public schools. Placements are available at schools that have special partnership arrangements with NYU. Our 12-month, full-time Fast Track M.A. program accelerates your preparation as a certified teacher. Specially designed for recent college graduates and career changers, the Fast Track program leads to initial teacher certification in a new accelerated format that allows you to complete your degree in three consecutive semesters, including summers, of full-time study. The programs in English Education and Early Childhood and Elementary Education also offer a four-week, 6-9 point summer study abroad program in London and Oxford, England. The program also offers a 30-credit masters degree for teachers seeking professional certification. The Ph.D. degree program in English Education is directed primarily toward students seeking or already holding positions as English teachers or English teacher educators in higher education or school systems.
