Columbia University in the City of New York's English and Comparative Literature Department offers a broad range of courses in traditional and emerging fields of literary and cultural study. The advanced "Literature in English" subject test of the G.R.E. is not required. In the M.A. year, students take eight courses, four of which must be seminars and include the fall Master's seminar in literary theory. M.A. students must also complete the Master's Essay and demonstrate proficiency in one foreign language.
