Curriculum and instruction emphasizes identification of philosophical, psychological, and sociopolitical assumptions underlying curricular and instructional decisions; analysis of curriculum documents; principles of curriculum design; and general attention to how the educational enterprise works (i.e., interactions among aspects of curriculum, staff development, organization, and community relations). The program also includes an opportunity to earn teaching certification in science and mathematics. Both research and practice are strongly theory-oriented. Special interests include conceptual change, teacher student interactions, discourse analysis, learning tools, philosophies of science, and environmental studies.
