The Counselor Education/School Counseling program at Lehman College of the City University of New York is locally, nationally, and internationally recognized as one of the top preparation programs for K-12 school counselors in the United States. It is the only graduate Counselor Education program in New York City with both Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accreditation (www.cacrep.org) and National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education programs (NCATE) accreditation (www.ncate.org). The program is also only one of two graduate programs in the New York metro area that is a companion institution with The Education Trust's National Center for Transforming School Counseling (www.edtrust.org) and one of two New York metro school counseling programs partnered with the National Office for School Counselor Advocacy (NOSCA) at The College Board. Our students are required to be members of the American School Counselor Association (www.schoolcounselor.org), which is where they receive their liability insurance for their 750 hours of pre-service fieldwork in 5 school counseling pre-practica (50 hours), 1 100-hour school counseling practicum, and 1 600-hour school counseling internship.
