Columbia University in the City of New York's Department of Classics emphasizes Greek and Latin language and literature. Courses offered include classes and advanced seminars on Greek and Latin linguistics, literature (individual authors and literary genres), ancient philosophy, intellectual history and critical theory as well as the technical discipline of classical philology (paleography, textual criticism, epigraphy, papyrology, numismatics). Students may also take courses in ancient history or ancient art and archaeology. A reading knowledge of Greek or Latin is required, together with some training in the other language. Deadline for M.A. only: July 15. Spring admission possible.
