The student may emphasize either crop science, soil science, general agronomy, or horticulture. The crop science section places special emphasis on the genetics and improvement of cotton, alfalfa, plant and crop physiology, crop production, and genetic engineering. The soil science section emphasizes environmental quality, soil-plant relations, soil genesis and morphology, and the fertility, chemistry, physics, and microbiology of soils, including forest soils. The horticulture section gives special attention to studies on the creative use of plants by man, to original research on plants, and to studies on the technical advancements in the husbandry of most economic commodity groups of fruits, vegetables, or ornamentals. Specialization may be in plant breeding and genetics, plant growth and development, nutrition, dormancy and cold hardiness, fruit and vegetable physiology, or plant anatomy. Improvement and seedling production may be pursued through forestry-related research programs.
