In 1995, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Rutgers' Graduate School-Newark beganoffering a joint program with the New Jersey Institute of Technology that leads to the Ph.D. in mathematical sciences. The graduate faculty at Rutgers-Newark provides research opportunities in many fields of pure mathematics, including low-dimensional topology, geometric group theory, number theory, representation theory, graph theory, and Riemann Surfaces and Kleinian groups. The program is designed to provide students with breadth and depth of knowledge in both classical and modern methods in mathematical sciences and to allow exploration of applications of this knowledge to problems in the sciences and engineering.
