Doctoral M.D./M.P.H. On Campus   We have developed an exciting practice-based Master of Public Health program at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. This program emphasizes the development of competencies important to the challenges of contemporary public health practice with special attention to the reducing health disparities in rural and underserved areas. Initiated to meet the growing needs for an expanded public health workforce in eastern North Carolina, our graduates gain skills to enable them to practice in a variety of settings and to be prepared for a range of career opportunities. Outstanding advantages of our program include both a core faculty in the Brody School of Medicine and the benefits of an inter-disciplinary faculty from other schools and colleges throughout East Carolina University. This rapidly growing program has more than 80 students and is recognized for its importance to the university, community and region. The Master of Public Health Program is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health as of June 2007. The core faculty, recognized experts in practice and policy, are committed to individually advise students. Core knowledge areas include epidemiology, public health services administration, environmental and occupational health sciences and health education and promotion. Excellent field placement opportunities exist for the required field experience or internship. Close linkages exist with local health agencies, health centers and hospitals. Students can participate in community-based research and service activities. Classes are scheduled in the late afternoon and evening to accommodate working students. The entrance exam may be waived for applicants with advanced degrees upon the recommendation of the graduate director. The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) may be substituted in lieu of the GRE. Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant's academic and professional capabilities, achievements, work experience, and/or personal qualities are required. Students must submit a resume or curriculum vitae.
