Traditionally, that study emphasizes extensive coverage of the recognized traditions of British and American literature; imparting to its students a knowledge of the generalhistory of such traditions has always been one of our department's strengths. Increasingly, the study of English also includes a concentrated re-attention to works that fall into other categories: our department is also committed to this charge.
