Training is available for mineral processing engineers, extractive metallurgical engineers, physical metallurgical engineers, materials engineers and welding engineers. Mineral processing engineers have the responsibility of accepting ore mined from the earth, comminuting the ore until liberation occurs, and then removing the valuable minerals in the form of concentrates. Extractive metallurgical engineers extract the valuable metals from the concentrates, remove impurities from the metals using aqueous or thermal chemistry, and then market the purified metal as a commodity. Physical metallurgical engineers accept various purified metals and alloy them to control a number of characteristics including strength and corrosion resistance. Materials engineers control the same characteristics as physical metallurgical engineers but the focus is on non-metals - particularly ceramics, polymers, cement, glasses, slags, and composites. Welding/joining engineers join the various materials together but with minimal destruction of the integrity of the materials. One of our former Metallurgical Engineering Master's Degree students states: "I worked in Ghana-West Africa under two graduates from Montana Tech and based on the way they worked and what they knew, I decided that Montana Tech was where the right things are taught. You have a lot of options: you may major in metallurgical engineering with some classes in computer science, chemistry, etc. It is really flexible here...aside from the excellent courses, you also get to meet professors who are friendly and are always prepared to help." Deficiency courses may be suggested to supplement the student's academic understanding of engineering principles, particularly as they apply to Metallurgical Engineering.  Pre-Requisite Courses International Student Requirements International students are required to submit TOEFL scores and an International Statement of Financial Support showing at least $23,000 USD in addition to the application materials. When all application documents are received by the Graduate Studies Office, foreign transcripts are sent to Educational Credentials Evaluators, Inc (ECE) to determine Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.
