Departmental research stresses the advancement of theory and the infusion of theory into applications. To facilitate such infusion, our research efforts range from highly theoretical studies to practical applications in a variety of technological and social areas. Some examples of theoretical studies are differential and algebraic system theory, differential geometry, nonlinear dynamics and control, distributed parameter systems, parallel algorithms, optimization methods, finite element methods and stochastic processes. Practical areas include electric power systems, aircraft control, chemical process control, structural analysis, computer systems, economics, transportation network routing and scheduling, robotics, manufacturing systems, artificial intelligence, and differential game theory and applications.
