Organizational Psychology at Michigan focuses on two of the master problems of social and behavioralscience. One is the problem of understanding how persons and organizations are related. The secondconcerns how social and behavioral science can be made useful. In modern societies, people are embeddedin organizational and group affiliations of many kinds, and the study if such environments can contribute muchto the explanation of human behavior. Similarly, the effectiveness of formal and informal organizations can beunderstood, in part, in terms of individual and interpersonal psychological processes. The goal oforganizational psychology is a better understanding of both individuals and organizations, formulation ofgeneral principles governing socially organized behavior, and development of dependable knowledge aboutorganizations and their members.
