During their first year of doctoral studies, students are under the umbrella of PIBS; students take courses and participate in research rotations with at least two different faculty members. At the end of the first year, students select a mentor and a program for continued pursuit of their degrees. Students typically begin to formulate their thesis project as this time. In their second year, students continue to take courses and perform research under the direction of their mentor. At the end of the second year, students take their preliminary examination.
