Today almost every professional position in any field requires the sharing in and direction of the work of others via the Internet, whether one’s colleagues are in the same building or on the other side of the world. Meetings are increasingly held online or via other communication tools of growing complexity. Teams with important missions routinely do business in this way, because distance requires it; and, often the members of corporate management teams represent very diverse cultural, business and working groups and values which confuse and detract from the work at hand. The Master of Science in Virtual Team Management and Communication will teach students to understand and manage the development and direction of teams at distance, the dynamic of communication within an organization, the impacts of distance and diversity on business practices and activity, the expectations of diverse legal and ethical environments, and culturally diverse business habits and practices in a worldwide environment. This program presents, from multiple perspectives, theory and processes for achieving team objectives in today’s virtual business environment. The program is targeted for team members, team leaders and managers working in virtual and globally distributed teams. Examining granular business operations from the perspective of communication, the program gives a framework for understanding and managing socio-cultural, regulatory and geographic issues in worldwide environment. It also presents the technologies of communication, various approaches to distributed team leadership and the knowledge and skills to equip virtual team leaders and managers to make better, more intuitive and well-informed decisions and provide stronger, more effective direction to teams working in a global marketplace. The program opens with a foundations course designed to introduce and offer a basic understanding for the rest of the program.
