Applied Mathematics was created in response to problems in science, engineering and society. Applied mathematicians work on a wide variety of topics, such as how to construct methods for multi-criteria decision making (requiring discrete mathematics and statistics), predicting how the financial markets will behave (requiring probability/statistics, analysis and optimization), and analyzing how liquids flow around solids (requiring expertise in computational methods and analysis). Students are prepared for careers in the insurance industry, electronics and computer manufacturing, logistics companies, pharmaceutical firms, government labs and agencies, as well as for careers in academic research. The IIT program also offers personal attention, small class size, and an active seminar and colloquium series.
