Master's
M.S.N.-Acute Care
On Campus

Within the Acute Care Advanced Practice major, students can concentrate in either the Emergency Nurse Practitioner subspecialty (ENP) or the Critical Care subspecialty. After completing the program, students will be prepared to practice in a critical care, emergency care, or acute care setting, at an advanced practice level. The Acute Care Advanced Practice Nursing program prepares students for leadership roles in health care delivery through substantial course work in theory, research, public policy and ethics. We also prepare students to safely and effectively manage patients with advanced courses in pharmacology, advanced health assessment, and specialty theory courses. Nurse practitioner majors also take additional courses in primary care, emergency care and critical care diagnostics. Most classes are held at the Loyola University Health System Campus in Maywood, IL. Some courses are web-based. Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP)/Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). Students in this major may select two role options: the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or the Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or a blended role. Each role shares a blend of practice, education, consultation, and collaboration. While the education of the ACNP and CNS overlaps in many areas, the primary focus of the ACNP education is diagnosis and treatment. The primary focus of the CNS is disease prevention, education, case management, and practice. However, each professional nurse functions within his or her own area of specialty (i.e., acute care) that determines the scope, skills, and tasks performed. ACNP students also have the option of taking additional clinicals and adding the CNS portion to their existing program. Each state also defines the scope of practice for advanced practice nurses. In Illinois, all advanced practice nurses are eligible for prescriptive authority and may apply for a DEA number.
