The purpose of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Iowa State University is to conduct quality research in basic biological sciences relevant to animals and humans as well as the instruction of graduate, veterinary and undergraduate students in the disciplines of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. The College of Veterinary Medicine was one of the founding colleges of Iowa State, so it continues to have a central position in the thoughts in the University. The University has a philosophy of a Land Grant University and is committed to being involved with teaching, research and service on behalf of the people of the State. It is becoming the best Land Grant University in the country. The Veterinary College at Iowa State University is the oldest veterinary college in the United States and has lead the way in the development of the Veterinary Education for a long time. A number of standard internationally recognized texts on Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Physiology and Veterinary Pharmacology are published by Iowa State University Press. We continue this tradition and have adapted as the new knowledge and techniques have emerged. Our research has also changed as the relative importance of food animals and companion animals has shifted. If you are a Veterinary Student, then we are the Department that you are exposed to first in the Veterinary College. You will learn the structure and physiology of domestic animals and companion animals. Later you will receive instruction on the properties of drugs and how they can be used for treatment of clinical conditions. If you are a graduate student then the Department offers (MS and PhD) graduate programs in Veterinary Anatomy and Veterinary Physiology and is a major player in the interdepartmental programs of Neuroscience and Toxicology. We are also committed to the instruction of undergraduates on campus where we teach anatomy and physiology courses.
