In the first semester, two topic areas are studied: human physiology and physiological measurement. In each of these a general overview of the subject is given, with selected topics covered in more depth. You also undertake a series of practical laboratory exercises during this semester. These include simulations of some important and commonly measured physiological parameters. In the second semester, you study therapeutic medical devices (pacemakers, surgical diathermy, dialysis etc.); standards and regulations; and medical imaging. There is a broad overview with some topics taught in more depth. Some practical work is also undertaken during this semester, designed to give you an understanding of electrical safety and risk in a medical context, and of the international standards covering this. There are also visits to hospital departments and medical manufacturing companies, in addition to lectures by invited speakers from hospitals and industry.
