As a large program, we are able to offer a wide variety of courses, ranging from the traditional to the innovative. Courses in literary periods, major authors, theoretical movements, and creative writing seminars are supplemented by specialty seminars based on current faculty research interests. Such a variety of course offerings signals both our recognition of intellectual and disciplinary change and our abiding commitment to traditional literary history. Course offerings arise from faculty research interests, and because we have very few course requirements ùparticularly at the doctoral levelù our program encourages students to follow the example of an intellectually engaged faculty in designing their own programs of study. All students who wish to teach get thorough training and significant classroom experience. MA students typically teach in their second year, while doctoral candidates begin in their first year and acquire a range of diverse teaching experiences by the time they go on the job market. A faculty Job Placement Coordinator guides job candidates through the process of seeking academic employment, and most faculty encourage students to publish their scholarship and become active members of the discipline. Consequently, our students are actively engaged scholars and teachers.
