The course is designed to provide a foundation in the methods used by art historians, archaeologists and connoisseurs in identifying, cataloguing and writing about art. This option enables students to explore the material and visual cultures out of which modern European society was formed and encourages debate around issues of ideology, changes in European society and concepts of 'renaissance'. Option B: Fine and Decorative Art (Renaissance to 1960) Established in 1978, and with alumni all over the world, the option B Graduate Diploma is one of the world's leading fine and decorative arts programmes. It explores the fine and decorative arts from the Renaissance to the 20th century in parallel, so that the important inter-relationships between them can be studied and understood. Art, patronage, the country house and the development of design are all key aspects of this course that make it uniquely appropriate for all those interested in the pictures, furniture, silver and ceramics that are preserved in great museums worldwide or still form the highest volume of sale room activity. Option C: Modern and Contemporary Art (1860 to Present Day) This course provides students with a dynamic, cross-disciplinary approach to the study of art from the late nineteenth century to the present day. There is a particular focus on contemporary art and ideas. Classes and visits are regularly led by art historians, artists, dealers, curators and critics, offering a stimulating range of intellectual perspectives on the art and culture of the period. This option gives students access to the ideas and methods used to critique the contemporary art scene.
