The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature offers two options leading to theM.A. degree in Foreign Languages and Literature with specializations in French, German,and Spanish. The student may choose between a selective focus on literature, language, andculture (Option I) or may elect to follow an interdisciplinary course of study (Option II).Although the two options differ in scope and emphasis, a core of required courses common to both stresses the development and enhancement of linguistic, methodological, research,and critical skills. Both options are designed to meet the needs of students who wish topursue advanced studies in a foreign language and its literary and broad culturalmanifestations as one of the liberal arts. Both options are also designed to serve studentswho, for professional reasons, seek to continue their studies for admission to a doctoralprogram or to meet specific career objectives in the private, governmental, or academicsectors, or in the international arena of professional work.
