The mission of the TESOL Program is to prepare professional English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) teachers who support and promote school and social responsiveness to the unique needs of first time learners of the English language both in the United States and worldwide. For teacher candidates, we offer SB 2042 Multiple Subject, Single Subject, and Educational Specialist Credential programs which include certification requirements to teach K-12 ESL courses in California. For graduates of the SMC Single Subject, Multiple Subject or Educational Specialist Credential Program, we offer a Master of Education in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Students without an SMC credential must complete the TESL certificate program at UC Berkeley Extension. Once finished, they can pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at Saint Mary's College Kalmanovitz School of Education.
