The aim of the program is to provide advanced training in the methods and techniques of historical research and writing. Course work at the graduate level stresses the critical reading of historical literature, participation in seminars, and research under faculty supervision. The department offers specialization in many diverse fields, with special emphasis on Europe, 19th and 20th century United States, Far Eastern history, social and cultural history, and women's history.
