The ability to interact with German-speaking nations on political, economic and cultural levels requires a thorough familiarity with the countries' traditions and their literary heritage. Students in the literature program are exposed to all literary periods but must concentrate on two. The department offers an alternate Ph.D. program in German linguistics, which involves complementary training in German literature and linguistics.
